Travel tips

Booking flights

Consider travelling via Honolulu, and getting separate tickets for Honolulu-Sydney. Spending a couple days in Hawaii on the way will make the timezone adjustment easier, and using Google Flights you may be able to find a deal to Sydney with Jetstar, a low-cost Aussie airline.

Choosing flights that arrive in Sydney mid-afternoon to evening is usually best to avoid jetlag, since seeing the sunset, having dinner, and then going to bed is a good way to reset your body clock.

Visa information

When entering Australia on a US passport, you'll need to apply for a visa.

The recommended way to do this is using the Australian ETA app.

See the instructions here.

Where to stay

For a view of the Opera House → Circular Quay.

For trendy bars and restaurants in a walkable neighbourhood → Newtown.

For beaches by your doorstep → Coogee or Bondi.

To be close to our place → Summer Hill or Lewisham.

Getting around in Sydney

Everything you'd need to get to is accessible via public transport.

Bec can provide you each an Opal card on request, which gives you access to all trains, light rail, buses and ferries around Sydney.

Alternatively, you can use credit or debit cards as long as contactless payment works - see Best ways for visitors to pay for public transport.

What to wear

In December the average daily temperature range is usually 64°F - 79°F.

It tends to be clear and sunny, with a high UV index, so sunscreen and sunglasses are essential most days if you're outdoors.

The max temperature for the month of December is around 94°F. But don't worry, we have great beaches where you can stay near the water all day.

The last piece of traditional Aussie attire you need is:

These are called thongs. Australians are pretty casual so you can wear these around to most places.

Using your phone

Avoid international calls and texts. Convince your friends and relatives to keep in touch via a messaging app like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, or FaceTime for Apple devices.

WiFi availability is fairly common at places like McDonalds etc, but not in every venue around Sydney.

So for light data usage when you're out and about (messaging apps, checking maps, online menus etc), I'd recommend a 2GB data eSIM for just $5 USD.
